Houston TechFest and Seattle Code Camp

Calvin WongHouston TechFest LogoSeptember comes to a close with two big events this Saturday: the Houston TechFest and the Seattle Code Camp.

If you’re in either area, they’re both great opportunities to learn something new and mingle with your peers!

Houston TechFest has grown to be quite a large event. This year, over 1500 attendees have already registered. Registration is still open and still free.

Seattle Code Camp Logo

The Seattle Code Camp has always been a popular event. Being held in the Redmond doesn’t hurt in piquing the interest of developers. Registration is still open. There is a small fee, but catered lunches and snacks are included.

DiscountASP.NET is proud to sponsor both events and wish all the presenters, volunteers and attendees a great time!

Build as a Service: Standalone TFS Build Server (Free Beta!)

Joseph JunWhen we introduced Team Foundation Server hosting, it was one of our first ventures into offering specialized software as a product and our first step into the software as a service market. As we listened and worked with our user base, we introduced multiple Team Foundation Server Proxy nodes to improve performance and the user experience and we also introduced Team Foundation Server Build as an add-on service for existing accounts.

I’m happy to announce that we’re taking our next step: Offering Team Foundation Server Build as a standalone service.

At this time, the system is not dynamic, resources aren’t being re-allocated on-the-fly and unfortunately, it will not have dinner ready by the time you get home (but we’re working on that).

So, what do we offer?

We provide a managed, stable working environment that allows for the installation of custom packages and software so that the build server will meet your exact requirements. With the service, you now have the ability to:

  • Add a build server without the account-related requirement (Yes, it works with Microsoft’s Team Foundation Service!)
  • Scale out an existing configuration by adding additional build servers
  • Deployment capabilities
  • FTP/WebDAV build retrieval

While the service is still in its beta stage, it is fully functional and we’re continually working to make improvements. If you’re interested in giving Build as a Service a try – for free – please contact our sales team at: [email protected] for more information.

Code Camp NYC Happens September 14th

Calvin WongCode Camp NYC

Code Camp NYC happens this September 14th. This is one of the favorite Code Camps for speakers to attend, because, well, it’s in Midtown Manhattan!

DiscountASP.NET is proud to sponsor the Code Camp NYC this year and we expect it to be, like always, a great event.

Usually, Microsoft will sponsor this event as well. In fact, the event takes place in the Microsoft Offices. But a couple of days ago, I noticed that Microsoft’s logo is no longer on the list of sponsors, but a certain Finnish cell phone manufacturer’s logo appears… hmm…

Pittsburgh GiveCamp 2013

Calvin WongGiveCampThe Pittsburgh GiveCamp is happening this week, on September 6th 2013.

DiscountASP.NET is proud to support the Pittsburgh GiveCamp and other GiveCamps all across the country.

If you would like to volunteer your develpment skills for a GiveCamp event near you, check out their site: http://givecamp.org/

Where do DiscountASP.NET customers focus their application development efforts?

Stefanus HadiWith the increasing number of technology frameworks and platforms and the increasing variety of form factors, developers need new types of skills to compete in today’s marketplace.

Each year our customers are spending more time learning different skills and we see them splitting their efforts in developing desktop, web, mobile phone, and tablet apps.

The following discussion is based on a DiscountASP.NET world-wide survey which was conducted in March 2013. We received a total of 1,308 responses. We’ll limit the discussion by looking at responses from our U.S.-based and U.K.-based customers. We had 840 responses from the U.S and 102 responses from the U.K.

We asked our customers where the main focus of their app development efforts will be in 2013. When comparing the results between our US and UK customers, 83% of the UK customers will spend time focusing on developing web apps, compared to 78% of our U.S. customers. However, more U.S. customers will spend their app development effort on mobile phone apps in 2013 than U.K. customers, 59% versus 52%, respectively.

Developing-web-mobile-phone-apps-USA-UK-2013When we look a little deeper by segmenting our U.S. customers by their hosting age, we found that our younger customers tend to be developing mobile phone apps more than our older customers. The U.S. customer survey results show that 52% of the 5-years or older customers will spend time focusing on developing mobile phone apps, compared to 70% of customers who signed up an account with us in 2012.

Developing-mobile-phone-apps-hosting-age-USA-2013The study found that our recently acquired customers are focusing more of their time developing mobile phone apps than our older customers. This indicates that our newly acquired customers have, in general, equipped themselves with newer programming skills or are emphasizing modern platforms more.
