PubCon Part I: Cloud Session was only Partially Cloudy

I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed in the Web Services and Cloud Computing session on Wednesday, Nov. 12. This talk was the main reason why I went to PubCon on Wednesday.

Don’t get me wrong, Mike Culver from Amazon Web Services did a good job selling the “Cloud” in his evangelist role and bringing in some examples from Amazon’s Cloud infrastructure services.

And our friend, Jeff Hardy, VP Business Operations from SmarterTools, did a great job of discussing where his company is when thinking about Cloud services and SaaS from the perspective of an independent software company. (Check out the SmarterTools Blog and there is a PDF of the slide deck.) Jeff brought up some interesting points, including the fact that all these different vendors are building out their own Cloud infrastructure independently and that in the future there will be a need for some standards for cross-cloud compatibility.

The main disappointment was that the Microsoft representative and the Google representative were a no show. I think there was word that one of them was stuck in an airport.

I hope to one day see a lively panel discussion with Microsoft, Google, Amazon and other Cloud service providers on the same stage.
